What personal data we collect and why we collect it

WBC may collect information about the pages you visit on our site and any information you offer upon request. If you register as a user WBC will collect your user information including name, user name, and email address.

If you agree to participate in any survey WBC will collect additional information about you and you preferences as a user so that WBC can better serve our users. If you participate in any discussion forums the information you enter will be collected and may be used for analysis of user activity. If you make online purchases WBC will collect information concerning the transactions you complete on the site.

This may include personal data, such as name, email address, personal account preferences; transaction data, such as purchase information; and technical data, such as information about cookies. Information is collected for input into the planning and design for continuous improvement of the website and for improved user experience on the site.

WBC is not tracking, collecting or retaining any sensitive personal data, such as data concerning health. WBC may track and retain user behaviour for the purpose of identifying and eliminating spam, phishing or other destructive, invasive, unethical or illegal behaviours in order to protect the privacy, safety and security of other users.

WBC uses WordPress for content management. By default WordPress and WBC do not collect any personal data about visitors, and only collects the data shown on the User Profile screen from registered users.

Comments

When visitors and users leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

Users who upload media files can expect to have related information disclosed. All uploaded files are usually publicly accessible. If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact forms

If you enter data into a contact form on this website, personal data may be captured when you submit the contact form. The information submitted may be kept for an indefinite period of time for customer service purposes.  WBC does not use the information submitted for marketing purposes.

Cookies

WBC uses cookies on this web site, including those set by your applications, social media, and analytics. We have provided the cookies which WordPress and related third party developers install by default.

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you have a user account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after one day.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics

WBC’s web host and applications collect some anonymous usage data for analytics purposes. This helps WBC better understand how its website services are being used. Users can opt out of analytics tracking, using a link to the analytics provider’s privacy policy.

Who we share your data with

WBC does not share site usage data with any third party providers, including partners, cloud-based services, payment processors, and third party service providers. WBC may share aggregated anonymized data with its members.

By default WordPress does not share any personal data with anyone.

How long we retain your data

WBC retains personal data collected or processed by the web site for up to ten years.  We keep contact form entries for six months, analytics records for a year, and customer purchase records for ten years.

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website, we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data

All data collected is kept on Canadian host servers which are subject to Canadian laws and regulations. That data is safeguarded to Canadian data protection standards. This includes WBC web hosting, cloud storage, and other related third party services.

Visitor comments are checked through an automated spam detection service.
